The iconic 140-year-old Isle of Wight hotel in Phillip Island, which famously played host to Fred Astaire, Ava Gardner and Gregory Peck during their filming of the movie 'On the Beach' in 1958, has a long and storied history. Twice destroyed by fire — most recently in 2010 — the site enjoys a prime location overlooking the iconic Cowes jetty.
Moda, along with Salta Properties and Tabet Development Group have proposed a new chapter for the Isle of Wight. Inspired by the most vibrant Australian seaside resorts and international beach venues, the vision is for an iconic hotel and beach club sitting within a larger, diverse mixed-use precinct that will set a new standard for regional hospitality and accommodation in Victoria.
By entirely rejuvenating the site, it can be returned to the community as a new, much-loved focal point to be enjoyed by Phillip Island locals, holidaymakers and future generations alike.
The Isle of Wight Hotel was an icon of Cowes for many decades. The new hotel and beach club aims to capture the nostalgia and spirit of the original hotel, bringing it back to life with a new energy for a whole new generation. Designed by Alexander &CO, the proposed plan includes a circa 160-room hotel, ground floor food and beverage facilities including a bistro, public bar and beer garden, a signature restaurant, a large-scale event space, retail laneway, a state-of-the-art wellness centre and a rooftop pool deck that will take in the spectacular north-facing views over the foreshore and Western Port.
Our role in shaping the vision for the new Isle of Wight was highly collaborative. Working closely with the Moda team and Alexander &CO, we helped curate a cohesive and compelling narrative that brings the project’s vision and objectives to life.
We guided community engagement initiatives, crafting language and tone of voice. We developed tailored RFP's and information memorandums to ensure clarity and alignment at every stage. With careful attention to detail, we oversaw render art direction, as well as designing on-site branding and website to ensure consistency and sophistication at every stage.
The design team leader, Alexander &CO were chosen for their outstanding experience with progressive spatial, community and philanthropic outcomes and their multi-award winning portfolio of hospitality and residential. This project will be the culmination of Alexander &CO’s expertise in delivering complex and large-format food and beverage projects within a context of urban renewal. Projects such as the famous Burleigh Pavilion, Manly Wharf Hotel, Harbord Hotel and Watsons Bay Hotel demonstrate the care and calibre they execute with every project.
To ensure the calibre of the venue, nationally renowned local hospitality operator Morris Hospitality (formerly Colonial Leisure Group) was selected to lead the way for the food and beverage and hotel component of the precinct. Morris Hospitality is a leader in Australia’s modern pub and hotel culture with its collection including the Albert Park Hotel, Portsea Hotel, The Railway Club Hotel, Half Moon, O’Connell’s, The Vincent and Lucky Coq.
The Isle of Wight enjoys a stunning backdrop. Phillip Island is one of Victoria's most popular tourism and leisure destinations, visited by over 2.5 million people annually. Internationally famous for the Penguin Parade, Grand Prix Circuit and a host of natural attractions, it has tremendous tourist appeal. Located directly opposite Cowes Beach — in the centre of the island's largest township — the new Isle of Wight will lead the ongoing civic renewal of the town centre.
