Photography Styling

The Magic Ingredient

At Assembly, we regularly leverage the power of imagery in our work. Sometimes it's an illustration, other times it might be animation, and quite often it's photography and motion video. Not just because we enjoy photography, but because it works. It's powerful, and it's relatable. After all, a picture speaks a thousand words.
Photography and motion video tend to prove good value as they're highly flexible. They can be used across many facets of branding and marketing — whether it be for social media, printed collateral or lead generation campaigns. Photography and video can also be chopped up, recut and reused. But as far as visibility and importance go, brand photography tends to lead the way — specific imagery designed to be front and centre, enhancing a brand's visual identity. As a result, colours, tones and overall aesthetics need to be highly considered to ensure a cohesive visual look across the brand.
High-quality photography and video isn't a straightforward exercise, particularly with talent (people) involved. But that's not for our clients to worry about — that's our job to take care of. Styling elements are a key consideration — typically encompassing wardrobe, hair and makeup, location and props — helping tailor the image to suit a specific concept or positioning the brand toward a target audience.

Talent; whether they be professional models or not, they need to be carefully considered to ensure they not only reflect the brand positioning but also embody the lifestyle or values the brand represents. This helps make the images more relatable and strengthens the likelihood of connection with the audience.

Wardrobe; clothing and accessories can be instrumental in setting the tone, style and character of the image. They can subtly convey elements that are aspirational to the desired demographic. For instance, a luxury brand might opt for elegant, high-end clothing, while a mid-tier suburban property brand would be better served by more day-to-day wear (albeit remaining aspirational).

Hair and Makeup; the right hair and makeup can further refine the image and enhance the mood, complementing the aesthetic theme without overshadowing other aspects.

Location

Location sets the scene. Whether it's an urban landscape for a modern, edgy brand or a serene outdoor setting for a nature-oriented brand, the location can powerfully impact the narrative. Finally, props add depth and authenticity to the shoot. Whether it be food, household objects, vehicles, bicycles, laptops or a simple coffee cup, they can all be used to highlight key aspects of the offer or to convey a particular message, contributing to the storytelling aspect.
In a nutshell, every styling element in a photograph or motion video is an opportunity to create a cohesive, compelling image that not only makes it worthy to be front-and-centre and a core part of the brand identity, but also appeal directly to its target audience. This meticulous approach ensures that the final images are not just visually appealing, but also prove good value by strengthening the brand.
